(skip to picks)Thanks to Club Benny, a.k.a. Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv, my streak has been pushed to 6. Yes, it is difficult to retrospect on picks that would have pushed my streak well past 10 over the past few days, but tortoise, hare, and the asshole bear as they say. So on to the picks.

Bnei Yehuda Battle To 1-0 Win In Daugavpils, Book 3rd Round Match With Paços de Ferreira
Bnei Yehuda 1 - 0 Dinaburg
Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv join fellow Israelis Maccabi Netanyu FC in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
``Earlier yesterday, Bnei Yehuda put away Dinaburg FC 1-0 their second-round qualifier in the Latvian city, after beating the club 4-0 in last week's first leg. Pedro Galvan set up Eliran Atar for the game's lone goal in the 32nd. "We came here at the peak of concentration and I'm happy we advanced to the next stage," said captain Assi Baldout. The orange-clad squad from south Tel Aviv will now face the winner between Pacos of Portugal and Moldova's Zimbru Chisinau."

Riders will roll into Aubenas, a first time stage town, after 178km.
1) This Tour de France is a bit anti-climactic as Alberto Contador pretty much had the yellow jersey wrapped up before yesterday's time trials and merely cemented his position by winning that stage as well. The main focus for Team Astana should be avoiding crashes and simply keeping up with everybody else. Stage 19 has been touted as a stage for aggressive cyclists meaning whoever decides to make a break early on has a good chance of winning the stage. Looking at the stage profile it's a mostly flat stage but without many sprint for points sections. There's a category 2 climb near the end up Col de l'Escrinet before a flat and fast final five kilometers.

3 of 8 cyclists with worse than 20/1 odds
and better than 30/1 odds from Spain or France.

So the stage itself favors no particular style of racing and the winner will be one of a group of say 6 to 20 cyclists who decide to break away early. It's really a bit of a tossup, so let's look at some odds. The odds in the table to the left are from SkyBet and they are different from odds one might find at BetFair or at WilliamHill. The table to the left shows four of the top six cyclists are from Spain or France but that outside of that top group it's all non-French/non-Spanish cyclists competing. BetFair has three of the top five being Spanish or French cyclists and WilliamHill has Kirchen and Hushovd favored over Freire and Sanchez. I'm going to say `any other nation' since cyclists who aren't overwhelming favorites have a good shot of winning anyways. With the stage wide open and with 99 of 158 of the riders being from any other nation I think they have a decent chance of winning, but it's just a guess.

2) The first thing I looked at for this match were the odds given by some European sports books. SkyBet has under 2.5 goals favored at 8/11 to even odds for the over while BetFair has the under favored at 9/10 to 27/25. WilliamHill has the odds broken down into over/under 2 goals with a bet for 2 goals exactly but even with the odds for 2 exactly combined with under 2 goals WilliamHill favor 3 goals or more. Taking into account the sportsbooks profits SkyBet have the under favored at -116, BetFair has the under favored at -109, and WilliamHill favors the over at -106. So it looks like people can see this going either way and the under tends to be favored since soccer is usually a low scoring sport.

Celtic F.C. look to hone their skills ahead of their Champions League match against Dinamo Moscow while Al-Ahly try to forget a 2-0 loss in the Egyptian Super Cup to Haras El Hodood.

Both teams are coming off matches where they failed to score. Al-Ahly lost in the Egyptian Super Cup to Haras El Hodood 2-0. The match report notes Al-Ahly are under a new coach who is implementing a 4-4-2 formation the team is unfamiliar with and that there was too much space in their central defense. There are video highlights of that loss in the link and to me it looked like Hodood made some very difficult shots. Of course, Celtic F.C. have the talent to make those same shots. Unfortunately for Celtic they were unable to finish their own chances in their 0-0 draw against Cardiff City. It was just a tune-up match for Celtic, but they were still disappointed with the result. They know they'll need to be in top form to take a lead from their first leg match with Dinamo Moscow in Champions League play (note: Al-Ahly is participating in the ACF Champions League, Africa's UEFA counterpart). Celtic's matches with Al-Ahly and on Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur will be tune-ups as well so one can expect some reserves to get some playing time at the half as Celtic try to find the best combination of players on the pitch. Al-Ahly will be without striker Mohammed Barakat but will return midfielder Ahmed Hassan who missed the 2-0 Super Cup loss.

With Al-Ahly still learning the 4-4-2 (incredible, I know) their defense will be suspect and Celtic should be able to take advantage. Celtic scored 2 or more goals in 23 of their 33 league matches last season but only managed to score 3 goals or more in 11 of those matches. With a tough defense that held a clean sheet in 15 matches and solid keepers in Artur Boruc and Lukasz Zaluska it will be difficult for Al-Ahly to score. I think Celtic can win 2-0, but 3-0 against a very good Al-Ahly team might be too much. The odds on this match are close enough that either pick has a good chance of winning.

FC Barçelona kick off their preseason against an injury depleted Tottenham Hotspur and may take the opportunity to give their youth some time on the pitch.
3) FC Barçelona are currently the champions of Europe after beating Manchester United 2-0 in Rome last May. Like Tottenham their domestic league season does not begin until August, and they will probably want to avoid some of the injury woes that have beset their opponents, Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs look to be in some serious trouble with three of their central defenders, Jonathan Woodgate, Michael Dawson and Ledley King, currently out with injury and potentially doubts for the beginning of the season. Additionally, strikers Robbie Keane and Roman Pavlyuchenko are out along with midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng. Spurs still have good attacking players in Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe but their defense will surely be tested by the likes of Thierry Henry and Lionel Messi. While Barçelona will be leaving a few players back home (Carlos Puyol, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Dani Alves to name a few) they will still have some of their best in the lineup and will display high quality even with their reserves. I would expect most of their first line players to be substituted rather early in the match, unless they are losing.

I would expect that even with Messi and Henry playing only half the match that FC Barçelona's reserves would be strong enough to merit being heavy favorites against Tottenham, but perhaps we're underestimating the North London club. Sportsbooks seem to have Tottenham as only slight underdogs. SkyBet, for example, has FC Barçelona at +110 to win, a draw at +200, and Tottenham to win at +225 which comes out to Tottenham win or draw at -135 and FC Barçelona at +135 without the sportsbooks profits. To me Barçelona should still come out on top in this match. They will want to show well their first time out after winning the treble and give an entertaining match to their fans in London.

St. Louis tries to deal Philadelphia's J.A. Happ his first loss of the season with Joel Pineiro on the mound. The Phillies are 6-5 in games where Happ starts.
5) This is probably one of my more bold (awful) predictions of the day. The Phillies are white hot offensively and are starting J.A. Happ who is 7-0 to start the season, never mind that Philadelphia is 6-5 when he starts. Philadelphia is batting .261 in their past three games despite getting caught in a 13 inning low-scoring win against the Cubs. Where the Phillies have been lacking is their slugging with a .361 average in those games. They have too many power hitters to keep that up for long but it's not going to help that they're facing Joel Pineiro today. Pineiro is sporting a 1.66 ground ball to fly ball ratio through 18 starts this season and has yielded only 3 home runs so far. He's also demonstrated excellent command by walking only 12 batters through 1221/3 innings. He also has yet to walk a batter in his last four starts spanning 292/3 innings.

Philadelphia has one of the elite offenses in the Majors, however, scoring 41.4% of baserunners. That Pineiro is unlikely to put many men on base through balls could be a big factor in St. Louis winning this game. I think the pitching matchup overall favors the Cardinals. Even though Happ has the lower ERA he's done so through fewer innings and has been fortunate to give up only 11 home runs with a mediocre ground ball to fly ball ratio of 0.64. Pineiro also has a better grasp of a wider variety of pitches and he likes to switch around which pitch he favors. It's difficult to pick against the Phillies but I think Happ is overdue to be knocked around for 4 to 5 runs which may be all the Cardinals need to win here. Recently acquired Julio Lugo may provide the needed kick against the left-handed Happ so keep an eye on the pre-game lineups to see if he'll be in.

Josh Johnson (left, 5.74 SO/gm, 7.7 K/9) faces off against Clayton Kershaw (right, 5.47 SO/gm, 8.7 K/9) tonight.
15) The Florida Marlins continue their West coast road trip with a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers after sweeping the San Diego Padres. Los Angeles owns the best record in baseball at 61-34 and have been a half-game better at home than the Yankees at 33-15. The starting pitchers are the focus of tonight's matchup, however, as we look to whether Josh Johnson or Clayton Kershaw will record more strikeouts. The table on the right gives some relevant statistics on the two pitchers. Josh Johnson averages more strikeouts per game than Kershaw, but by less than one. He does have a higher median meaning he has fewer low strikeout games. In fact, he has thrown 5 or fewer strikeouts in only 8 of 19 starts whereas Kershaw has failed to break 5 strikeouts in 13 of his 19 starts. Kershaw has been plagued by inefficiency and has failed to make it through 6 innings in 9 of his starts so while his overall strikeout numbers are low his K/9 is greater than Josh Johnson's. So far this season Johnson has pitched one more inning per game than Kershaw.

Both pitchers have started 19 games.

Lately Kershaw has been more dependable going for 6 or more innings in five of his past six starts. Johnson can generally be counted on to complete seven innings. So, one thing to keep in mind here is that Johnson is likely to have an extra inning or two to work with in getting strikeouts. The one factor I think tips the scales in favor of Kershaw is that he's pitching against the Marlins. Florida ranks 29th in the Majors in terms of plate appearances per strikeout while the Dodgers rank 11th. True to form the Marlins were struck out 9 times by Kershaw earlier this season. I like Kershaw to strike out the Fish again tonight, but it's definitely no gimme with Josh Johnson capable of going a full nine.

``Andy Schleck is the best young rider in the race, his brother Frank was the best rider in the 17th stage. It was a thrilling finale to a climbing stage that was dominated by a sprinter for the first two-thirds of the journey from Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Le Grand Bornand… and then the GC guys came out to play. Over the fourth and fifth climbs there were attacks from the defending Tour champion, Sastre, but he would later suffer for his efforts. Instead, the stars of the show were his former team-mates Frank and Andy Schleck. They put themselves in a winning position by following attacks by the yellow jersey and then setting a furious pace all the way to the finish where Frank beat the yellow jersey."

Canada (1:0)Panama (2:1 aet)
Honduras (4:0)Haiti (2:2)
Honduras (2:0)Honduras (2:0)
Haiti (1:0)Grenada (4:0)
12) In this game the United States are favored and so is 2 goals or fewer. Of course 2 goals or fewer is only at -135 with 3 goals or more at even odds so it's not a sure bet by any means to take the under here. Looking at the table on the right one sees that Honduras has played four matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with 3 of the 4 matches seeing 2 goals or fewer scored. The United States has also played four matches with only 1 of the 4 seeing 2 goals or fewer scored. These two sides have already played a match, in the group stage, which saw the United States winning 2-0. Michael Parkhurst should be returning to the squad and could replace Jimmy Conrad on defense. Parkhurst started for the U.S. in their 2-2 draw with Haiti and their 2-0 win over Honduras. Yanks Abroad has a good preview of the match. A relevant excerpt follows:
``The Gold Cup semi-final match up will be a repeat of the group play affair that took place at RFK in Washington, DC just two weeks ago. That game was scoreless until the Americans broke away to a 2-0 victory thanks to a pair of quick strikes from the MLS-based duo of Santino Quaranta and Brian Ching late in the second half."
A number of previews can also be found through Google News. With the possibility of extra time a 1-1 draw in regulation could easily see a 2-1 win or it could stay 1-1 and go to a shootout. I'm thinking the United States wins 2-0 again, however.

(top) Haren's strikeouts/opponents total hits in 19 starts this season vs. innings pitched.

14) It looks like Haren has fanned 6 to 9 batters in 12 of his 19 games and has struck out more than 9 in 3 games and fewer than 6 in 4 games. The Pirates have had 6 to 9 hits in 11 of their last 19 games. So this prop is closer than one might think. I do think the Pirates strike out more than the average team. They're 14th in strikeouts but only 24th in total plate appearances. Good luck.

(skip to picks)1-0-0 today with the Tigers as I kept to my strict regimen of one pick a day, at least during the week. Overall it looks like my picks will be right around .500 for the day. The day started with two players sitting at 25 wins, the longest streaks we've seen in seven months of playing. One of them went down with a missed pick on Allsvenskan soccer of all things. The other is looking good to reach 26 wins as the Sounders just went up 2-1 in extra time of their U.S. Open Cup match. My bet is that 25 to 28 wins will be the range containing the top 7 streaks in December, but hey, maybe someone with a big streak will get ballsy and hit 35 or 40 with a big run on a stunt day. Until then, it's on with the picks.

Detroit and Porcello got me the win though it looks like it was a much harder fight than the 8-1 score after the 2nd inning suggested.
``Seattle's Jack Hannahan hit two of the seven home runs in the game. Miguel Cabrera, Placido Polanco also homered for Detroit. Wladimir Balentien and Ryan Langerhans connected for Seattle. Seattle starter Garrett Olson (3-4) allowed seven runs in 1 1/3 innings while [Tigers] rookie Rick Porcello (9-6) got the win despite allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk in five innings. The Mariners went up 1-0 in the first on Jose Lopez's RBI single, but the Tigers quickly took command with five in the bottom half and three in the second. Curtis Granderson led off with a single and scored on Polanco's double. Olson walked Cabrera and Marcus Thames to load the bases, and Ordonez gave the Tigers a 5-1 lead with his first grand slam in seven years."

(top) Proportion of games this season recording 'N' total bases. (bottom) Total bases in last 20 games played.
11) This prop pits second basemen Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox and Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers against one another to see who will record more total bases. Total bases are simply bases earned from a hit. So if a player grounds into fielders choice and the defense makes a play at second the batter reaching first does not get a hit and does not get a total base. If a player hits a double to deep center and stretches it into a triple they earn two total bases since the fielding is what allowed the third base to be reached.

Of the two players considered here Ian Kinsler is the better power hitter with a .491 slugging average compared to Pedroia's .422 slugging average. The bottom graph on the right shows each players' total bases in their last 20 individual games. Surprisingly (or not) the bulk of the middle of the graph shows Pedroia recording more total bases in most games while the most recent games and the games three weeks ago show the two recording identical numbers. Looking at the splits for each player one can see that Pedroia has a .595 slugging average over the past two weeks while Kinsler has slumped a bit with a .421 slugging average in that same time. Those numbers will normalize at some point with Pedroia hitting fewer doubles and Kinsler getting some more home runs, but I'm not sure it will be in this game.

The starting pitchers in the game are projected to be Clay Buchholz for the Red Sox and Vicente Padilla for the Rangers. Kinsler is 0-for-3 against Buchholz in his career while Pedroia is 0-for-2 against Padilla. I somewhat expect both batters to be shut down by the starters again today. Pedroia, Kinsler, Buchholz, and Padilla are all right handed when batting or pitching. In general right handed pitchers do well against right handed batters as they are releasing pitches at the inside of the plate. Clay Buchholz doesn't have much experience in the Majors but in his 19 starts plus 2 relief efforts he has shown a typical platoon split, with lefties slugging .443 off of him and rightys slugging .386. Over the past three years Vicente Padilla shows the same trend with lefties/rightys slugging .498/.372 off of him. One reason I favor Pedroia in a matchup with few total bases is that he hits right handers about as well as left handers while Kinsler excels against left handers but struggles against righties. Looking at the top graph to the right one can see that both players are getting zero hits in a high proportion of their games (30% is a lot for a star player). Pedroia is recording 1 to 3 total bases in 56% of his games while Kinsler is recording 1 to 3 total bases in 41% of his games. Kinsler has many more games than Pedroia with 4 or more total bases so normally I'd favor the slugger, but with these pitchers I like the more consistent hitter, Pedroia.

Notes
12) CD Motagua is one of the staples of Honduran soccer having won the league championship 6 times since 1997. Last season was not their most successful but they did defeat Deportes Savio on the road last season 2-0. It's the very beginning of the Apertura portion of the season and I haven't looked to see what changes each team has made to their side. Motagua is favored to win the game but not by much and generally I'd stay away from these season opening sorties unless it's a league you're very familiar with.

Matt Diaz had a tiebreaking two-run triple in Atlanta's six-run seventh inning, helping the Braves snap a five-game skid against San Francisco. Sanchez struck out eight over six solid innings in his first game since his gem against San Diego on July 10. He gave up three runs and four hits. Sergio Romo (2-1) replaced Sanchez and failed to record an out, allowing four runs and four hits. Casey Kotchman had an RBI single after Diaz tripled, and pinch-hitter Ryan Church greeted Justin Miller with a two-run homer. Brian McCann added a run-scoring single."

To the left is a list of the riders given better than 20/1 odds at SkyBet. Only four of those nine riders are from Spain, Italy, or France but all four are in the top 25 in the climber points standings. Only Andy Schleck and Cadel Evans from the other nations are in the top 25. Essentially the 'favorites' to perform well in a mountain stage are from Spain, Italy, and France but a strong showing by another rider like Andy Schleck could steal this particular stage win. Any other nation is a mild underdog in this case. Considering only the odds on these nine riders the odds are -120 for the winner being from France, Italy, or Spain and +120 for the other nations.

11) Manny Ramirez passed Mickey Mantle for 15th all-time in home runs last night with number 537 in his second at bat of the night. That's a good omen if you're betting on Manny to hit, strikeout, or walk in his second at bat in tonight's game. In his other three plate appearances Manny struck out once, hit a single, and flied out to right field. Over the course of the season Ramirez has managed to hit, walk, or strikeout in 61.5% of his plate appearances ([47H+33BB+27SO]/174PA). Tonight he'll more than likely be facing Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey by the time he gets up to bat for the second time. In five starts this season, spanning just 28 innings, Bailey has walked, struck out, or given up hits to 48.4% of his batters faced, so on his side of the equation this is more of a tossup.

Homer Bailey may look goofy on his delivery but it still may be enough to strike out Manny Ramirez.

Where I think we see that Bailey is better than 50% likely to give up a hit, strike out, or walk Manny is in his platoon splits. First off, whether facing right or left handed batters his BB/9 is at or above 6.0, a number most starters can't survive. When it comes to striking batters out he's also at 6.0, but the bulk of those strikeouts are coming against right handers with a K/9 of nearly 9.0. Clicking on batting average on balls in play (BABIP) shows he tends to give up more hits to right handers when they make contact with the ball as well. Ramirez is a right handed batters. For Manny his strikeout rate, walk rate, slugging percentage, and batting average are all greater against right handed pitchers such as Homer Bailey. Overall Manny is going to hit, walk, or strikeout more often than not and Bailey is going to give up a hit, walk, or strike out a right hander like Manny more often than not. Obviously with a one-play-prop like this anything can happen but the 'any other' result is less than likely.

United States Advances To Championship Game With Eight Run Mercy Win
United States 8 - 0 Australia (in 5)
This one could have easily been even worse for the Aussies. I think it was the third inning the US had runners on second and third with one out so Australia opted to intentionally walk the bases loaded. Unfortunately the Australian pitcher hit the next batter to walk in a run and then threw four balls to walk in another. Australia went with an 18 year old rookie who then gave up a grand slam to make it 7-0. 10 runs or under looked bad when the same rookie pitcher found herself in the same situation, bases loaded with one out. This time, however, she induced an inning ending double play and from there it was smooth sailing!
``Ashley Hansen clubbed a grand slam and Jennie Finch threw a two-hit shutout as the U.S. advanced to the World Cup of Softball championship game with a 8-0 win against Australia on Sunday."

7) Joey Votto (.588 slugging in 216 at bats) and Manny Ramirez (.622 slugging in 135 at bats) would be two of the slugging leaders in the Majors if they had the minimum number of at bats required. Looking at the graph on the right one sees that Votto has had enough at bats to have developed a relatively normal looking total bases curve. It is a bit unusual for him to have more games with zero at bats than any other number, most players have a few more games with singles. Votto has a large number of games with 3 or more total bases, however, so that games when he does hit he tends to get more than one hit, including an extra base hit. Manny Ramirez's curve still looks rather jagged as he's only played in 40 games this season. Assuming his curve will tend to normalize he is going to have more games with at least one hit than not, but will have quite a few lone singles games (i.e. 1 total base). Overall this graph tells me Ramirez is more likely to get one total base and that Votto is more likely to get one or zero total bases.
Clicking on the graph one can see the total bases each player has gotten in each game played since Manny returned from suspension. One sees that both players have been very productive and have tended to alternate games with 4-plus total bases and games with 0 or 1 total base. Votto has had 4, 0, 0, and 2 total bases in his last four games while Ramirez has had 1, 0, 2, and 0 total bases. This graph here suggests both players are due for a home run, or a couple of doubles. I think Manny Ramirez is just a bit more due, however, especially playing at his home park.
Finally, I think the pitching matchup favors Manny Ramirez to get a big hit and rack up the total bases. Jason Schmidt is returning to the lineup for the Dodgers after sitting out most of the past two seasons with a shoulder injury. He's been pitching in AAA with the Albuquerque Isotopes for the past month and a half and has done semi-decent, racking up a 4.18 ERA in 321/3 innings with a 1.30 WHIP. That's fairly comparable to Micah Owings' 4.94 ERA and 1.58 WHIP earned in the major leagues. Where I favor Schmidt to do a better job pitching is in terms of HR/9. Before Schmidt was injured he gave up quite a few home runs, but he was far more likely to concede one to a right handed batter, while Joey Votto bats left. That was in 2007, but he had given up 3 home runs in his AAA rehab stint so one might assume he's not pitching lobs to the plate. Micah Owings also gives up more home runs to right handers, which is the side of the plate Manny Ramirez bats from. The Dodgers' bullpen should be able to limit Votto far more than the Reds' bullpen can limit Ramirez as well.

(skip to picks)3-2-0 today. I got greedy after starting out with three wins, one with the All Blacks of New Zealand, then a close one stroke win with Lee Westwood, followed by another nail biter with the Yankees. Then it all went south. Kenshin Kawakami walked in a run and really that was about all the Mets needed as Atlanta failed 100% when it came to hitting with runners on base. Bases loaded to end the inning twice and a man on third two other innings, no runs scored. Finished with the Colorado Rockies who were pretty quiet offensively. It just took one poor inning by the weak Colorado bullpen for San Diego to take the lead and they ran with it. I'm nearly done painting my new place and moving in so the blog will be back to normal come Monday. And so, on to the picks.

(skip to picks)Well, I avoided the dreaded five game losing streak with Angel Cabrera in the morning. Paul Casey was downright bad, but then the course played pretty difficult as the majority of players ended up over par for the round, including Tiger who missed the cut by one stroke with his +5 overall. From there I got back to work picking FC Kärnten to get me back to L1. They went a man down at 79' with the score tied 1-1. They managed to keep it that way until injury time where they gave up two goals to the Wieners of Neustadt. Then it was another loss with Suppan and the Brewers and now I'm looking to take a third straight L by avoiding all my winning picks in the evening and going with the Angels. Ah well, things continue to be busy so on to the picks!
