June 18th, 2009 Picks

(skip recaps)2-0-0 today with Kassid and the Iraqis playing solid disicplined football and Lincecum battling through the 8th inning to earn his eighth and ninth K's. I think I need to make some modifications to the mp3 player so it will play streams online. I guess the only real utility of that would be to listen to music on a device with a sound card, but no playback software. Hah. I guess I can be pleased most of my losing picks went down in ridiculously close games but really I'm kind of ticked the bad luck douchebag drained all over my picks. Fair warning, tomorrow's picks will almost assuredly go down in flames. I imagine there'll be a streak extending path in there somewhere, good luck finding it. And on to the picks.

I'll be updating the layout today, but I'll also try and get up a preview of the Cabrera v. Pujols total bases prop. One thing to keep in mind, Piniero may not give up runs, but his BAA for the season is over .300, much worse than Porcello's.

David Villa Brings The House Down Around Bora And Iraq
Spain 1 - 0 Iraq (David Villa 54')
Bora Multinovic got the best out of his Iraq squad but it was not quite enough as Spain continued their undefeated streak to 34 matches.
``Iraq played with a lot of dignity. They played a smart game and played to their limits and made it very diffuclt for us today."
---Spain coach Vicente del Bosque
``Forward David Villa's powerful 55th minute header made him Spain's second highest scorer of all time with 30 goals - 14 behind Raul's record of 44. Spain had to work hard against the ultra-defensive Asian champions who, despite drawing their opening match 0-0 against South Africa and losing this one without scoring a goal are still in with a chance of reaching the last four."

Lincecum Gets Touched Up In The 8th, Angels Win
Los Angeles Angels 4 - 3 San Francisco Giants (Tim Lincecum 8 IP/9 K)
A disappointing loss after a strong showing for Tim Lincecum.
``Los Angeles' eighth began with singles from pinch-hitters Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero, who fell behind on the count 0-2 before grounding a low pitch up the middle past shortstop Edgar Renteria. Hunter scored on Chone Figgins' double -- a line drive off the glove of second baseman Downs, who dove for the ball but couldn't quite snare it. Erick Aybar's infield single to deep shortstop scored Guerrero with the tying run. Figgins advanced to third on a passed ball and, after Maicer Izturis struck out, scored on Juan Rivera's groundout to third base. San Francisco's infield was playing in, yet third baseman Pablo Sandoval threw to first base even though Figgins was barely more than halfway home when he gloved Rivera's chopper."

Brazil seeks a return to form with a convincing victory over a gutsy United States side.
3) The United States will seek to claw out a place over Italy or Brazil in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup, though it would most likely require a win today to do so. Brazil can clinch their place in the semifinals with a victory over Landon Donovan and the United States, and would like to accomplish not only that but a return to the form that saw them cruise through their South American World Cup qualifying stage most recently. Click here for a selection of previews from the BBC, ESPN, FIFA.com and more. SkyBet has placed odds on the particular scoreline for this match and I must say it does not look good for the U.S. Converting to percentages and removing the sportsbooks' profits the odds for Brazil to have a larger winning margin are 66.1%, for the U.S. to have more team goals 22.4%, and for the total to be equal 11.5%.

The U.S. will rely heavily on Landon Donovan to create and will need players like Jozy Altidore to do better finishing if they hope to beat Julio Caesar (Brazil's keeper) and keep their semifinal hopes alive. Brazil has a powerful counter attack with superior speed and dribbling ability so the U.S. will also need to move away from traditional football and play a more possession styled approach. Unfortunately, I do not see the U.S. team as being disciplined enough to pull this off and it will only be through extraordinary luck that they may be able to keep pace with Brazil's scoring. With a penalty here and a questionable offsides call going their way there they may be able to secure a draw, but I somewhat expect Brazil to come out with a fury and to score quickly and repeatedly as they seek to reestablish themselves in this tournament.
``Over the last few years we (Brazil) have played a good number of matches against the United States. We may have won most of those games and have the edge in the overall record, but not a single one of those games was easy for us. I remember our last meeting, in 2007 in Miami, the 4-2 scoreline may not show it, but we had to fight hard for that win. The US team is tactically very disciplined and organised and I am sure Dunga will brief us properly to face them the right way and to avoid the kind of mistakes we made in the second half against Egypt," ---Brazil midfielder Kaka
``After losing our opener, this game against Brazil is now a must-win for us. We know we can give a hard game to any team we meet and Brazil will be no different. We need to put the first game with Italy behind us and bounce back by getting right at Brazil." ---USA forward Landon Donovan

June 17th, 2009 Picks

(skip recaps)1-0-0 today with a fine win by South Africa. They only set the target at 131 runs with their innings, but some superior spin bowling after the Powerplay overs (the first 6 overs) limited India to 118. I added a podcast player down near the bottom of the page. Still experimenting with it, but ideally I'll have some podcast updating with an RSS type of feed at some point. Maybe some music to go along with the TV, and eventually a cool 3D gamecast application for MLB kind of like what they have already for cricket. And on to the picks.

South Africa Remains Unbeaten With 12 Run Victory Over Reeling India
South Africa 130/5 - India 118/8
The pitch at Trent Bridge contributed to the low scores here. Fortunately, the South African attack was just a bit more spot on, especially de Villers.
``On a spin-friendly Trent Bridge surface, South Africa's slow bowlers rubbed salt and some spices into India's gaping World Twenty20 wounds, defending a modest total of 130 with consummate ease. The real difference between the sides though was AB de Villiers, who batted quite magnificently for a 51-ball 63 on a pitch where no other batsman excelled. With the ball, Johan Botha took 3 for 16, and was superbly supported by Roelof van der Merwe (1 for 13) as India stumbled from 47 for 0 at the end of the Powerplay overs to 69 for 5. The two Punjabis, Yuvraj and Harbhajan Singh, briefly floated some hope, but Botha and Dale Steyn snuffed out the challenge to send South Africa through to the semi-final undefeated."

Previews
1) Fernando Torres set an all-time record for the Spanish national team for fastest hat trick when he scored three goals in an 11 minute span, all before 17', in La Furia Roja's 5 to nil defeat of New Zealand on Sunday. With a victory over Iraq Spain can ensure they advance past the Group stage of the Confederation Cup. Spain know they will not be able to romp over every opponent as they did the

“We have studied our rivals and we know that they will not make it easy for us. We expect to suffer against Iraq, as we will against South Africa. It won’t be easy for Spain.”
---Spain Center Back Carlos Machena
All Whites with Carlos Puyol and Carlos Machena each making comments to that effect at the pre-match press conference. One cannot help but think these comments are merely the required diplomatic responses expected from professionals as Spain continue to play a dominating style of football which even the very best in the world have had trouble contending with.

Certainly, the Lions of Mesopotamia will not go down without as much of a fight as they can muster. Although they are currently ranked only 7th in the Asian Confederation the Iraqi squad continues to surprise and achieve positive results with Bora Multinovic at the helm. Multinovic is leading his eighth national team with Iraq and has achieved more success with the talent he has had to work with than possibly any other manager in modern football. He knows they have a monumental task ahead of them but has admitted he will play ``negative football" in order to achieve the result. With Kassid in goal and a 9 or 10 men back strategy Spain could find things crowded and difficult when they move forward for the score. Even then, it would seem Spain would only be limited to a convincing win rather than an overwhelming and thorough thrashing.

With the top notch quality in this competition there is a good deal of media coverage which you may sample by clicking here. Looking at the table below one can see Spain's most recent nine results. Spain have outscored their opponents 29 to 2 in those nine qualifying, Cup, and friendly matches and Fernando Torres has scored 5 of those goals. I would expect players like David Villa and Xabi Alonso to enter into the scoring fray after the recent outburst by Torres. After all, some of them have money riding on Villa.

Fernando Torres now holds the Spanish record for fastest hat trick at 11 minutes.
``We've got a sweepstake going on who will end the tournament as top scorer. I went for Fernando Torres so I'm winning right now." ---Cesc Fabregas, Spain midfielder

Uzbekistan will have to do without Dynamo Kiev striker Maksim Shatskikh in their last gasp effort in Bahrain.

Bahrain only need avoid losing by more than one to enter into the World Cup qualification playoff.
2) Uzbekistan currently lie 3 points behind 3rd place Bahrain in Group B of the Asian Zone. The 3rd place team will enter into a two-leg home and away semi-final with the 3rd place team from Group A and the winner of that will advance to a final playoff round with the corresponding CONCACAF side to determine who will enter into the 2010 World Cup. Bahrain are 1 goal ahead of Uzbekistan in differential meaning they would need to lose by 2 goals or more to fail to qualify for the playoff round. Uzbekistan coach Mirdjalal Kasimov had strengthened his squad ahead of their home tie against Bahrain in February, adding strikers Maksim Shatskikh (Dynamo Kiev, Ukraine), Shahboz Erkinov (Pas), midfielders Vagiz Galiullin (Rubin, Russia), Aziz Ibragimov (Bohemians, Czech Republic) and defender Vitaliy Denisov (Dnepr, Ukraine). They lost the match 1-0.

Now they must travel to the small island nation to face Bahrain in Manama on the brink of elimination. Unfortunately for the Uzbeks their star striker, Maksim Shatskikh, has been ruled out due to injury. Worse still, Bahrain will be at full strength and have proven to be a nuisance to the best Asian teams even with major injury concerns. Most importantly for the Bahraini side will be the return of striker A'ala Hubail who missed out on their 0-2 defeat away at Australia. Also returning for Bahrain will be defenders Abdulla Al Marzooqi, Mohammed Hubail (younger brother of A’Ala), striker Ismail Abdullatif and midfielder Mahmood Abdulrahman. This information and more can be found in goal.com's preview, which predicts a 1-1 draw between these sides.

Looking at the table below it would appear Bahrain have been in stronger form more recently, but Uzbekistan has played the tougher schedule. Still, Bahrain has achieved their results while riddled with injuries and I think Bahrain is the stronger side. The main concern for Bahrain will be a let down in play with their main concern being to avoid defeat by 2 goals or more. If they see the match as preparation for the qualification playoff and play up to their potential they should win fairly easily.

With new found success under Jose Peseiro Saudi Arabia remain hopeful they can win against North Korea.

With a two goal lead on differential North Korea need only secure a draw in Riyadh to clinch a place in the World Cup.
3) North Korea will visit Riyadh today (current temperature: 113º) to take on the Green Falcons of Saudi Arabia. The two sides are tied on points in their World Cup qualifying group with North Korea holding a two goal edge in differential. After Iran and South Korea played to a 1-1 draw earlier today the winner of this match will take the 2nd automatic berth to the World Cup available from their group. Because Iran failed to earn the full three points from their final match North Korea can also clinch a place in the World Cup with a draw in today's match.

Saudi Arabia's campaign started out with the Green Falcons earning only 4 points from their first four matches which included a loss at home to South Korea and a loss away at North Korea. Since then they have installed 49-year old Portuguese international Jose Peseiro in the manager's role. Under his guidance they have earned another 7 points from their last three matches and now find themselves with the opportunity to book their place to South Africa at home in Riyadh. They will have to do it without Abdoh (knee) and Ahmed (suspension) Ateef who have appeared in 13 and 10 of their qualifying matches, respectively. Their loss will be tempered by the return of striker Yasser Al Qahtani who is capable of single-handedly turning the tide of this match.

``If we win against North Korea in Riyadh, we will get a ticket to South Africa. North Korea may just have to draw, but only a win will do for us."
---Saudi Arabian coach Jose Peseiro
North Korea will be at full strength and will provide a difficult challenge for the Saudis and with the knowledge that a draw will send them through to the World Cup will be able to play without near the pressure facing the Green Falcons.

SkyBet has odds on this match at -160 for Saudi Arabia to win, the draw at +250, and a North Korean win at +400. With Qahtani healthy and playing in top form and with Peseiro at the helm the Saudis have a good chance to win this game. North Korea will be playing staunchly knowing they can take the draw. I think the 110º temperatures will favor the Saudi Arabians, though not nearly as much as most people would believe. As long as Saudi Arabia can remain calm and avoid giving up a goal through counter attack I think they can pull off the desired result with a 1-0 win.

(top) Lincecum's strikeouts by game.
(bottom) Lincecum's strikeouts/batter faced vs. Opponent's strikeouts/plate appearance over season.
5) No member of the Los Angeles Angels has faced the Freak in their careers. Tim Lincecum will aim to show them what he's got. Lincecum has been described by some as a strikeout artist. He's averaging just under 8 strikeouts per game this season and has 8 or more strikeouts in 9 of his 14 starts this season. The chart above shows his strikeouts in each of his 14 starts this season. The graph just below it shows Lincecum's strikeouts per batter faced compared to that team's average number of strikeouts per plate appearance over the season as a whole. Except for a rain delayed game against Florida recently Lincecum has struck out batters far more often than they are used to. He struck out New York Mets batters at twice their season rate in picking up 8 strikeouts against them, and indeed averages striking out opponents at 1.8&mult; their normal rate*.

Tim Lincecum is a blur even to the cameras.

The Los Angeles Angels average 6.2 strikeouts per game, but that includes their strikeouts against relief pitchers. In 6 innings then they may only strikeout an average of 4.1 times per game which would translate to 7.4 strikeouts for Lincecum. 7 innings would come out to 8.7 strikeouts. There are a number of ways to look at the stats, but they all agree on Lincecum getting anywhere from 7 to 10 or more strikeouts in an average 6 or 7 inning day. Throw in that Matt Palmer will be batting for the Angels and I feel 8 strikeouts is a fairly safe number. One might ask: ``What if Palmer can bat?", but a look at his minor league numbers should allay this fears. In 2008 and 2009 Palmer had 67 at bats, striking out 28 times and getting 6 hits and has been a sub-.200 batter for most of his career. Of course, all this is moot once the game begins as what will be, will be, but I'm thinking he will be very good today.
*To compute Lincecum's strikeout rate from a team's baseline rate simply take their plate appearances per strikeout and divide by Lincecum's batters faced per strikeout for that game.

8) Today will continue the tale of two pitchers whose seasons have charted opposing courses since the first day of April. Scott Richmond started out with a 2.67 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 4-0 record on hiw way to winning the NL Rookie of the Month award for April. Since that time he has 5.06 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and an 0-3 record. Philadelphia's 46 year old left hander Jamie Moyer has seen a change a bit more drastic. In his last five starts he has a 3.77 ERA and 1.10, which has only been good enough to bring his ERA to 6.11 with a 1.49 WHIP on the season.

Will Richmond and Moyer exchange fortunes or remain on their current course?

That Scott Richmond's record went from 4-0 to 0-3 with increases of only 0.09 in WHIP and 1.29 in ERA speaks more to a problem in Toronto's batting over the past month than with Richmond's pitching. Fortunately for Richmond the Blue Jays may have found power in their bats in the nick of time. Aside from scoring 5 runs in the 10th inning against Philadelphia yesterday the Blue Jays are batting .241 with a .398 slugging average in their past three games. Those numbers don't sound impressive, and they aren't, but it's still 1.68 total bases per hit, an improvement over their season average. If Toronto can continue to bat those dingers against Moyer it will give Richmond a great opportunity to pick up a win.

A seemingly strong factor in favor of Philadelphia in this game is Moyer's record against Toronto. In his extensive career Moyer is 14-8 with a 5.27 ERA against the Blue Jays over his career, but this is no flock of Common Loon's he's facing. Against the most recent iteration of the Blue Jays Moyer has a .364 bat against average with Toronto's lineup slugging .596 in 151 at bats. At 29 years old Richmond is at or possibly a year past his prime, while Moyer passed his over a decade ago. That Moyer has been pitching so well for nearly a month leads me to believe he's just waiting for the `right' team to bat around with. I think Toronto could be that team. The best chance for Philadelphia will be their offense, which has been batting just over .300 and slugging just under .500 in their past three games. They have been laying off the extra base hits in that time and while they are unlikely to bat .300 in this game they are more than likely to go long. Whether they will be able to get men on base ahead of those shots will play a big factor in determining if they can keep up with Toronto. With a 3.2 BB/9 ratio I favor Richmond to avoid recklessly populating the bases and without those multi-run homers I favor Toronto to keep the lead after 6.

9) Check out the graph below. Kinsler has a slew of games with more total bases than Berkman's had all season. Ortiz's DICE (defense independent component pitching) is worse than his actual ERA this season which is generally a good indicator that the pitcher will have a poor start at some point. Kinsler won't have a monster game, but a home run and a single are not out of the question.

(skip recaps)2-1-0 today thanks to the goddamn Indians relievers. They could not hold on to a 4 run lead with only 5 outs to go. Wedge finally put in Joe Smith who disposed the last 5 Brewers quickly and efficiently the damage had already been done. Thoroughly. At least U.S. born Giuseppi Rossi got me a win with Italy and then the Giants' clean up crew with three hits in the 6th. So on to some unadulterated picks.

The U.S. played a man short after Ricardo Clark was ejected in the 33rd minute for a late tackle on Gennaro Gattuso, but went ahead eight minutes later when Donovan scored his American-record 40th international goal after Giorgio Chiellini hooked and kicked Jozy Altidore."

``Prince Fielder hit a go-ahead grand slam in Milwaukee's six-run eighth inning and the Brewers rallied to beat the Cleveland Indians 14-12 on Monday night. Milwaukee's comeback overshadowed another difficult outing for Dave Bush, who was charged with eight runs in 31/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. Previews
1) Muscovite and world #7 ranked Vera Zvonareva is set to return to the WTA Tour after sitting out the past two months with an ankle injury suffered at Charleston. She had been set to return at Roland Garros but thought better of aggravating the ankle. It's not the first time she's had problems with her ankles. She was set for a final round match at the Hobart International last January in a run up to the Australian Open before rolling her ankle in practice and being forced to withdraw. Perhaps it was her first round exit at the Australian that taught her a lesson in patience. She took a month off after the early Oceanic exit before returning to reach the finals at Doha where she was defeated by a healthy Maria Sharapova.

Vera Zvonareva quietly celebrates another victory in 2009.

Her opponent in this match, #17 Amelie Mauresmo, has not had the same kind of success on the Tour this year, despite playing in more events having avoided any injuries so far this year. Neither player has had much experience on the grass surfaces in England recently with Zvonareva going 1-2 on grass in 2008 and Mauresmo going 2-1, at Wimbledon, in her only grass matches of the year. Mauresmo has enjoyed more success on the grass surface, especially when she was in her prime 3 to 5 years ago. She's also dominated Zvonareva in those years with a 7-1 all-time record. None of those matches have come on grass, however, and the most recent victory for Mauresmo was in 2005, when Zvonareva was 20 years old.

Mauresmo is the money line favorite to win this match with Zvonareva returning from that ankle injury. I think she is probably the better grass court player, but at this stage in their careers Zvonareva is easily the more talented of the two. I'm going to guess that Zvonareva has been practicing during this off time and will be well prepared entering into this tournament.

2) South Africa have used a terrific run in test and Twenty20 cricket to become the #1 team in the world. Their recent defeat of West Indies have put them into the ICC Twenty20 semifinals and left them undefeated in the tournament. India, on the other hand, are facing questions of whether the recent Indian Premier League season put too much strain on their team as they have dropped two straight matches. Their failure to chase 153 at the death against England on Sunday was a `bitterly disappointing' result for the defending champions that eliminated them from the competition. Cricinfo has put together a very nice and succinct preview of the match here.

South Africa is unbeaten in this tournament and looks to avoid another international choke by winning at all times.

India is eliminated and should be eager to prove their skill before leaving England.

This dead rubber match will thus pit the former top cricketing nation against the newest to hold that title. All the buzz in India has focused on explaining away their failure. Fatigue, both mental and physical, the absence of Virender Sehwag and the effect of his supposed rift with captain Dhoni, and an Achilles heel here and there being cited as reasons for their early exit and to avoid sounding the alarm just yet. Current coach Gary Kirsten focused on the strain the IPL schedule and busy international schedule placed on the players while former national coach Lalchand Rajput put Virender Sehwag's absence and the effect on team chemistry as the main factors. Click here to listen to Kirsten's reasoning as well as some analysis regarding India's weakness against bouncers and short-pitch bowling.

South Africa will be well aware of those weaknesses and will have the bowling attack to take advantage of them, especially with Morne Morkel being added to the squad in order to rest Jacques Kallis.

``It gives us an aggressive bowing option. A few other guys slide up the order and get more batting chances. This is our last week of what has been a great season so we want to make it count."
South Africa's Graeme Smith on Morkel's inclusion
The South Africans will want to put forth their best effort in order to maintain their winning form in this tournament and avoid yet another let down in international cricket. Past disappointments after a strong run have led to South Africa being labeled as `chokers' by some and have taught their fans to not expect anything from their team. South Africa have even gone so far as to hire a psychologist to keep them focused on winning and not on the pressure of high expectations.

With Parnell in top form - he bowled Chris Gayle out on three balls in their match against West Indies - and the knowledge of India's weakness against the bouncer South Africa should be well prepared to limit India's run rate to a manageable number should they bat second. India was unable to chase 153 against England and it is hard to see them coming out victorious here if they should chase, with South Africa likely to set a higher target. Although India should be eager to prove they did belong in the semifinals with a strong final match the overall tone from their camp is one of defeat and a desire to regroup and retool as quickly as possible.

5) Italy face Serbia in the UEFA Under-21 Championships after both teams made successful qualifying bids (Results displayed in table). Marco Motta and the Azzurini will be looking for revenge against a Serbian side that disposed of them 1-0 in the 2007 campaign, a tournament in which Serbia reached the finals before losing to the Netherlands 4-1. Italian coach Pierluigi Casiraghi will have to decide whether to play a standard 4-4-2 formation or go with a 4-3-3 formation to take advantage of his talented trio of strikers, Mario Balotelli, Robert Acquafresca and Sebastian Giovinco. UEFA highlights some of the stars to watch out for from each squad in this article with Bojan Krkić and Mario Balotelli getting the nod for Serbia and Italy, respectively. Serbia sees this match against Italy as the most important towards their goal of reaching the semi-finals, but that they have set the sights below the Championship implies even they do not see themselves as the best of the best. Italy may be too powerful up front for the Serbians to claim victory, but I think they have enough firepower in their own arsenal to secure a draw.

10) Well, I have to favor Justin Verlander in this prop as he is facing a team who walks less often and has a lower bat against average. He also has a higher K/9 so that when the other team does not put the ball in play he is more likely than Adam Wainwright to get an out from it rather than put a man on base and face another batter. Verlander does use slightly more pitches per inning on average than Wainwright, but both pitchers are on a 100 to 120 pitch count and will pitch up to 120 if they are having a good game. I favor Verlander to have a better game as he is facing a weaker offense and has a lower bat against average than Wainwright. Looking at the chart below one sees that in the past couple of weeks Verlander has pitched more innings but that for certain stretches earlier in the season Wainright was pitching more games. I am hoping Verlander can stay ahead on innings pitched for one more start before we see another reversal in that graph.
Justin Verlander and Adam Wainwright's innings pitched in 2009, game-by-game. Verlander has more innings pitched in 6 starts, Wainwright more in 5 starts.

June 15th, 2009 Picks

(skip recaps)2-0-0 today with the 2 goals or fewer in the Sud Afrika match and the Yankees steamrolling over the Mets. It was a good day overall for my picks and with another couple like that I can start to push the red days off that two-week graph over there. I was kind of hoping Orlando would win the Championship, but I can get behind rooting for Kobe and Gasol. No reason they shouldn't win it again next year too really. And if my Utah Jazz draft another OSU big man (B.J. Mullens), well let's just say we have an overabundance of 7 footers we don't utilize already, why add another? Well, on to the picks then.

Hosts South Africa Graciously Keep Iraq From Stepping In It
South Africa 0 - 0 Iraq
Iraq had only a few real scoring opportunities and denied Bafana Bafana at every other turn.
``Hosts South Africa and Iraq shared the spoils in the opening game of the Fifa Confederations Cup in Johannesburg. The hosts missed a hatful of chances with Kagisho Dikgacoi unlucky to see a goalbound header accidently blocked on the line by team-mate Bernard Parker. Earlier South Africa's Macbeth Sibayo saw his 20-yard shot tipped round the post by Iraqi keeper Mohammed Kassid. Striker Parker saw two efforts saved by Kassid while Thembinkosi Fanteni headed Teko Modise's corner over the bar. Substitute Katlego Mashego should have done better for South Africa when finding himself one-on-one with Kassid. But as was the case for much of the game the Iraq keeper proved to be unbeatable, doing well to smother the ball at the feet of Mashego."

Yankees Chase Off Santana, Stokes, Anyone In A Mets Uniform
New York Yankees 15 - 0 New York Mets
``Today was a terrible day and that's about it. I didn't locate my fastball today the way it's supposed to be located."
--Johan Santana on today's performance
I think Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, and Hideki Matsui all kept their slugging averages against Johan Santana above .500 in this one.
``Johan Santana was way off track in the Subway Series. Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees hammered Santana in the worst start of his career, routing the Mets 15-0 on Sunday for the biggest interleague blowout between the Big Apple rival. They [the Yankees] needed only four innings to set a season high for runs in a game, building a 13-0 cushion for A.J. Burnett (5-3). The Yankees finished with 17 hits, three by No. 9 batter Francisco Cervelli, and pulled several stars before the seventh."

Previews
1) World #40 Marc Gicquel faces off against #72 Steve Darcis in the first round of the Ordina Open today. Both players are coming off grass court tournaments over the weekend, with Gicquel losing in the first round at Halle to #32 Rainer Schuettler and Darcis losing in the quarterfinals at Queen's Bridge to #90 Juan Carlos Ferrero. Darcis advanced into the quarterfinals past Gael Monfils who withdrew from the tournament. Both Queen's Bridge and Halle were ATP 250 Series events with Darcis advancing further past lower ranked players and Gicquel bowing out to #32 Schuettler. Gicquel defeated Schuettler in straight sets at Roland Garros, however, meaning he's either seen a drop in play in the past week or that Schuettler is simply a weak clay court player.

Marc Gicquel seeks his first match victory on grass this year at Ordina. Gicquel was runner up at this event last year.

Darcis is the more successful ATP Tour player of the two as he has two ATP Tour wins at the young age of 25 while Gicquel has yet to win any ATP event at 32. Still, Gicquel is a regular on the ATP Tour while Darcis still plays a number of Challengers events. I think Gicquel's overall experience will serve him well in this match as will his experience of reaching the finals at Ordina last year before losing to current #4 David Ferrer in straight sets.

Over Darcis' short career he is 2-0 against Gicquel, with clay court wins coming in the Netherlands in 2007 and 2008. Darcis has won 4 out of 5 sets played against Gicquel, though he has won only 29 of 53 games played. So far this year statistically they are nearly identical in terms of 1st serve percentage, service points won, and so on. Oddsmakers have the odds on the two dead even at -120 each.

Brazil are peaking at the right time and are ready to defend their Confederation Cup crown.

Egypt hope to regain some of the form that saw them become African champions in 2007.
2) Brazil are all set to defend their Confederation Cup title from 2005 with Egypt simply looking to avoid the `whipping boy' status imparted on New Zealand by Spain yesterday. Egypt won the 2007 African Cup to qualify for this tournament but are currently sitting in last place in their World Cup qualifying group, though they are only through 1/3 of their matches. There are previews from a number of sources all over the internet, click here for a sampling of the best.

"We're expecting a very hard match, a lot harder than a lot of people are expecting back in Brazil. Most of the Egyptian players aren't that well known around the world, but one thing's for sure; you don't win two consecutive continental championships just by chance. You need a lot of quality to do that." ---Brazil coach Dunga
"Egypt cannot afford to fear Brazil in our opener because if we enter the first match with such a feeling, we will show the same fear against the other teams." ---Egypt coach Hassan Shehata

Sportsbook SkyBet has Brazil as heavy favorites with over 2.5 goals scored favored at -150 and under 2.5 goals at +110. They also have markets on who will score in the game. Fabiano is most favored at -110 with Robinho next at +100 and followed by Kaka and Pato at +135 each. Looking at the tables below Brazil has been in excellent form, scoring 12 goals in their past 5 matches. Kaka has scored one of those goals, a penalty kick against Uruguay and Robinho has two goals, one in the friendly against Italy and another in their most recent match against Paraguay. It should be noted that Fabiano was suspended for the match against Paraguay and played limited minutes against Italy, however. As for Egypt, the Pharaoahs have been in relatively poor form, conceding 6 goals in their last 5 international matches, all against moderately weak African sides. I think the Seleção will play at just under 100% and Egypt may surprise them with their defense. Brazil should score at least 2 goals, but I would be surprised if they put on 5 goals like Spain did against the All Whites. Considering Kaka has not scored in 5 matches except on penalty kicks I think he is less likely to be the receiver in an attack. Fabiano is the main focus of the offensew with Robinho the secondary threat. Kaka will play on the wings and take fewer shots than either of the two. I think Egypt will be the more motivated club, with something to prove, and favor Kaka and Robinho to be out of the scoring in this match.

The U.S. will field a strong squad against Italy but still have to prove they can win away from North America.

Italy will be without experienced center back Cavanno but are still one of the elite teams to beat.
5) Both Italy and the United States come into this Confederation Cup tournament in good position for World Cup qualification. The Yanks currently sit in 2nd place, two points behind Costa Rica. They must finish strong to remain in 3rd place or better and a strong showing away from the friendly fields of the U.S.A. would be a good start to that. Italy lie in the first position of their World Cup qualifying group but as the defending World Cup champions their place is already confirmed. Still, they have struggled some of late and would like to show they remain one of the best in the world. Of course, according to their coach that only applies to a certain point:

``This first game with the United States is obviously the most important for us. They are a quality opponent, eager, and a strong team that are difficult to break down. We need to keep totally focused on this first game because it will set the rhythm for us. It could make or break us." ---Italy coach Marcello Lippi

There are a number of previews from sources such as the BBC and goal.com with most predicting a win for Italy, but not without a major fight from the Americans. Click here to peruse them at your leisure.

From what I can gather it sounds as if the United States will be taking the opportunity to try out some new formations and tactics while Italy will simply be looking to find that dominating groove. From the table below it appears as if Italy is a bit out of sorts and the United States should have a very good chance at securing a draw here. It is only their poor road form which has me favoring Italy strongly to come out the victors in this match.

7) The Milwaukee Brewers continue Interleague play after dropping two of three games at home to the Chicago White Sox. The Brewers batted .238 with a .376 slugging average in those three games and were outscored 14 to 12. Their opponents tonight, the Cleveland Indians, continue their Interleague homestand after winning 2 of 3 against the St. Louis Cardinals, outscoring the Red Birds 11 to 6 thanks to some fantastic pitching. The Indians also had some fairly mundane batting numbers with a .242 batting average and .385 slugging average. The Brewers scored about half a run below their average this season, but the Indians were worse, over 1 run below their season runs per game average. The Indians' batting numbers were also further off their season marks. Overall, Cleveland is scoring more of their base runners and doing it on fewer total bases than the Brewers meaning they have better base running, better batting with runners in scoring position (RISP), or both.

The Indians will try and continue their Interleague success with a celebration of `Major League'.

The Cleveland Indians may need every bit of offensive apptitude working for them with right hander Carl Pavano starting on the mound. Pavano has recorded a 5.40 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 13 starts this season. Pavano is coming off a one of the worse starts by any starting pitchers in the league this season, giving up 9 earned runs from 11 hits in only 42/3 innings to the Kansas City Royals. The only bright spot being that Pavano still only walked one batter. Pavano rarely walks a batter, as in his next prior start where he walked two batters while shutting out the White Sox for 9 innings, and has a 3.6 K/BB ratio. His counterpart this evening will be Dave Bush. The Milwaukee Brewers pitcher has a 4.58 ERA and 1.26 WHIP through 13 starts this year and is coming off a decent start against the Rockies. In that game he gave up only 3 earned runs in 5 innings but it proved to be one run too many as the Brewers lost 4-2. It was his first game pitching since being struck in the elbow against Florida on June 4th.

Dave Bush has given up a home run every 5 innings he's pitched on average this season and his ground ball to fly ball ratio reflects that. Cleveland will probably be without the services of Grady Sizemore in this game, but still have a lot of skill in the lineup with players like Martinez, Choo, and Peralta. With Bush pitching it seems these players could expect to scratch out at least a 3 runs with only 4 or 5 hits. I think the Brewers will need a more solid performance from their lineup to match the Indians offensively. With quality starts at Fenway (Boston), Yankee Stadium (New York), and against the Tampa Bay Rays this season Pavano has the greater potential for shutting his opponent down. Milwaukee has a much better bullpen, especially in terms of home runs conceded, however, so they should not be counted out of the game if only trailing by those three runs.

8) Although Victor Martinez is 0-for-6 against Dave Bush in his career he simply gets hits in more games than Prince Fielder. Fielder has never faced Carl Pavano and looking at these graphs I would not be surprised if he goes 0-fer today. In fact, a zero to zero push would not surprise me at all in this one.

Martinez's numbers have gone down significantly in the last month. Fielder's numbers have been off and on all season.
